Why ATV Camping?

To really enjoy what nature has to offer you have to get out in it and an ATV camping adventure at an uncrowded remote wilderness campsite puts nature all around us. Primitive camping is a exciting way to relieve the stress of every day life. There are many wrong ways to camp but there is really no right way, because the right way to camp is a personal preference. I have been an avid camper for over forty years and the remote deep wilderness areas are where I enjoy camping most. This is primitive tent camping. When I was a teenager, my friends and I would hike for miles with our backpacks to get to some great camping spots. As I got older I would carry a backpack on my dirtbike to get even further into the wilderness, but the fear of running out of gas was a problem and you can only carry so much on a dirtbike. Then I was introduced to camping ATV style.

Now, with my utility four-wheel drive all terrain vehicle (4x4 ATV), I can get almost anywhere in a short time and with the right accessories and proper selection of my camping gear and supplies, I am able to get to anywhere I want with confidence. Confidence that I have enough gas, food, water, camping gear and supplies for several exciting days of fishing, hunting, hiking, riding, relaxing, and enjoying nature to its fullest. Most utility 4x4 ATVs have racks that can carry up to 200 pounds, quite a bit more than anyone wants to carry in a backpack. With the proper selection of ATV camping accessories one could load an ATV with enough gear, supplies, accessories (see the handy Camping Checklists), and fuel for an exciting camping adventure.

ATV Load Capacities

ATVs can get loaded down so much that they become tip hazards and they increase the chance of a breakdown due to exceeding the ATVs rated load capacity. No better way to ruin a good outing than someone getting hurt or a breakdown. Sometimes the problem was the wrong selection of gear and improper loading. By selecting lightweight and compact camping gear and properly accessorizing your ATV, you are prepared to start effectively loading. All utility ATVs have maximum load capacities and it is the responsibility of the rider to keep his/her load within those capacities otherwise you risk damage to the ATV and/or injury to yourself. Also, loading an ATV with camping gear and supplies raises the center of gravity and the rider needs to be extra cautious because the ATV will handle differently with the extra weight. Keeping the load as low as possible will help significantly. Try to avoid the use of big coolers as these tend to sit very high on the ATV and can be very heavy based on the contents.
